Emerging Church infiltrates Adventist Theology

"Adventism and cities may not always have mixed well. But thanks to recent initiatives, such as Mission to the Cities, that is changing."  (George R. Knight, Cities: An Adventist Challenge, Adventist Review, 2 May 2016)(see screenshot at left)

THE REASON WAS SIMPLE

"The San Francisco metropolitan area has the highest percentage of the adult population who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) of any of the top 50 U.S. metropolitan areas, followed by Portland, Oregon, and Austin, Texas." (Frank Newport and Gary J. Gates, San Francisco Metro Area Ranks Highest in LGBT Percentage, Gallup.com, 20 Mar 2015)(see screenshot at right)

OR, AS DR. KNIGHT PUTS IT

"Beyond that, the general Protestant wisdom of the day feared the evils of the city, where people could all too easily become involved in dissipation and enslaving vices." (George R. Knight, Cities: An Adventist Challenge, Adventist Review, 2 May 2016)

BUT AS URBAN POPULATIONS GREW, THE ADVENTIST CHURCH GROWTH FELL WAY BEHIND

"In 2010, a total of 80.7 percent of Americans lived in urban areas, up from 79 percent in 2000." (Lisa Lambert, More Americans move to cities in past decade-Census, Reuters, 26 Mar 2012)

NEW MISSION TO THE CITIES THEOLOGY

"Dr. Peter Landless is the Executive Director of the International Commission for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (ICPA), and Director of the General Conference Health Ministries Department."
(General Conference Health Ministries, http://healthministries.com/users/peterlandless)

THE LANDLESS DOCTRINE

"Top Adventist health leader calls for compassion regardless of the cause of homosexuality."  (see tweet at left)

But "Adventism is still dealing with some anti-urban bias, and some cities are still Adventist “deserts”" (George R. Knight, Cities: An Adventist Challenge, Adventist Review, 2 May 2016), so Andrews University developed a sure-fire crowd pleaser:

TOP THEOLOGIAN ACTS TO REMOVE ALL "ANTI-URBAN BIAS"

"We should protect the rights of homosexual persons".  (Roy Gane, Tuesday Choice: The Old Testament and Homosexuality, Andrews University, 5 Mar 2013, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6KGuJr7jLY, minute 22)  "We know as you consider how important it is who a student learns from that you would like to be able to attend a college

FAITH-BASED GAY RIGHTS ACTIVISM

where all aspects of the learning are faith based"  (Randy Graves, Vice President, Enrollment Management, Andrews University, https://www.andrews.edu/parents/newtoandrews/):  Dr. Gane is "Professor of Hebrew Bible & Ancient Near Eastern Languages" at Andrews.  (see graphic at right)

"SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN ADVENTIST THINKING"

"Taking hold of the commission to preach the third angel’s message “to every nation, tribe, language and people” (Rev. 14:6) brought significant change to Adventist thinking about the cities. They knew that they had to reach the world’s great cities." (George R. Knight, Cities: An Adventist Challenge, Adventist Review, 2 May 2016)

SO THEY TURNED TO THE SABBATH SCHOOL QUARTERLY EDITOR

"Clifford Goldstein has been editor of the Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide since 1999." https://absg.adventist.org/about-us

"I’m sure Jesus looks approvingly on ‘loving, monoganamous, and committed’ homosexual sodomy". (Clifford Goldstein, see screenshot below) "But whatever the case, Adventism continues to be fully devoted to our God-given task of taking the good news “to every nation, tribe, language and people,” cities and their populations not excluded." (George R. Knight, Cities: An Adventist Challenge, Adventist Review, 2 May 2016)

WITH THE HELP OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Elder Goldstein is a member of the Executive Committee of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.  http://www.adventistyearbook.org/ViewAdmField.aspx?AdmFieldID=GC

ELDER GOLDSTEIN DRAWS HIS INSPIRATION FROM THE POETRY OF WALT WHITMAN

"I loved Leaves of Grass" (Clifford Goldstein, It is so, Adventist Review, 16 Jan 2014), "which celebrates the soul through the trope of fellatio: ‘Loafe with me on the grass, loose the stop from your throat, / … Only the lull I like, the hum of your valved voice’.  Leaves of Grass, the title Whitman gave his collected poems, pivots upon this dalliance with a young man in the grass." (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, and Allied Resource Office, Walt Whitman, University of Illinois Springfield, http://www.uis.edu/lgbtqa/WaltWhitman/)

A COMMITTED ADVENTIST

Sister Alicia Johnston "grew up in the Adventist church, and she loves the church’s values and traditions, such as a commitment to the environment and weekly observance of the sabbath. She attended Adventist schools for most of her life (Adventists are known for having high-quality educational institutions)".  (Bisexual Adventist And Former Pastor Alicia Johnston Contemplates Ministry After Coming Out, 13 May 2017, https://epeak.info/2017/05/13/bisexual-adventist-and-former-pastor-alicia-johnston-contemplates-ministry-after-coming-out/)

WITH GAY TENDENCIES

"She had always known she was not straight but had long decided she would live her life as if she were heterosexual and never pursue dating or relationships with women."   (Bisexual Adventist And Former Pastor Alicia Johnston Contemplates Ministry After Coming Out, 13 May 2017, https://epeak.info/2017/05/13/bisexual-adventist-and-former-pastor-alicia-johnston-contemplates-ministry-after-coming-out/)

THE POWERFUL INFLUENCE OF DR. ROY GANE AND ELDER CLIFFORD GOLDSTEIN

But then she started reading the Sabbath School Quarterly, and "eventually went to seminary"  (Bisexual Adventist And Former Pastor Alicia Johnston Contemplates Ministry After Coming Out, 13 May 2017, https://epeak.info/2017/05/13/bisexual-adventist-and-former-pastor-alicia-johnston-contemplates-ministry-after-coming-out/), where Dr. Gane sowed the seeds of gay rights activism in her fertile mind.

THE NEW THEOLOGY WAS CONFUSING

"After a lifetime of certainty that the Bible provided a clear case against same-sex marriage and relationships, she was shocked to find things weren’t so simple."  (Bisexual Adventist And Former Pastor Alicia Johnston Contemplates Ministry After Coming Out, 13 May 2017, https://epeak.info/2017/05/13/bisexual-adventist-and-former-pastor-alicia-johnston-contemplates-ministry-after-coming-out/)(see graphic at left)  Clifford claimed to have had that special revelation from Jesus, and Roy had his back.

SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST MINISTER ALICIA JOHNSTON EMBRACES CLIFFORD'S THEOLOGY

"Eventually, she embraced an affirming theology and began to understand what that would mean for her. After much prayer and conversations with friends and family,

DR. GANE'S HARVEST

she decided to come out.

She wrote a letter to her congregation’s leadership and to the conference (the Adventist governing body that includes her former church) explaining two things: One, that through study and prayer

FEMALE ADVENTIST MINISTER ADOPTS ELDER GOLDSTEIN'S THEOLOGY

she had embraced a theology that affirms and includes LGBT people, and two, she herself was bisexual." (Bisexual Adventist And Former Pastor Alicia Johnston Contemplates Ministry After Coming Out, 13 May 2017, https://epeak.info/2017/05/13/bisexual-adventist-and-former-pastor-alicia-johnston-contemplates-ministry-after-coming-out/)

Proving once again that Dr. Roy Gane is a highly effective educator.

No wonder he runs the Seminary.
